Practices:
Clean, hand-written code. I know every single class, id, tag in my sites because I think in CSS.
This comes in immensely handy when a browser throws a wobbly and I have to troubleshoot hundreds of lines of code.
I'm not a fan of hacked CSS; I'd rather find a workaround for the function I'm trying to acheive, than to hack at it. CSS3 is a bit of an exception, though I'm still on the fence about how it'll play out in the future.
Commented css and JS, naming and organizing layers in photoshop.
Applying the psychology of color, form, texture, and type to design. I know what the Halo Effect is and I'm not afraid to use it.
Testing in multiple browsers, versions and platforms for color and layout consistency.
Obsessing over a design; color, texture, UI design, until I get it right.
.
Meeting deadlines. Shaking their hand.
Reading clients when they insist they don't know what they want. Mostly using psychology, knowing their business, reading body language and hearing what they're not saying.
And last - though arguably equally as important - retaining a sense of humor, a sense of 'I can figure this out', when presented with events that would otherwise invoke some sort of aneurysm.

I've been working with versions of these programs/code since 1998 (with the obvious exception of jquery), when I started designing websites for small companies in New York. I freelanced for years, until working for the University of Colorado on a banking site, then moving into the mountains and working for VistaWorks for the past 4 years. I have years of experience altering Wordpress sites. In the last year I collaborated with a programmer to integrate designs I created into Drupal and Joomla, so am relatively familiar with their structure, benefits and limitations, though do not claim to know how to re-program them. |
